3-D and 4-D Imaging
HOW DOES ULTRASOUND WORK? Ultrasound imaging is based on the same principles involved in the sonar used by bats. During an exam, a sonographer moves a transducer over the part of the body to be imaged. The transducer functions as both a loudspeaker (to create the sounds) and a microphone (to record them). High-frequency sound waves reflect off internal structures (soft tissue, organs and blood flow), producing echoes that are processed into an image displayed on the ultrasound system monitor.
WHEN CAN I GET MY 3D/4D ULTRASOUND? We recommend between 28 and 32 weeks but it can be done anywhere between 26 and 34 weeks.
WHY SHOULD I HAVE A 3D/4D SONOGRAM? In conventional 2D scanning, the ultrasound image is made up of a series of thin slices and only one slice can be seen at any one time. Although the image is informative the picture you see may not look like a baby. With 3D ultrasound a volume of echoes is taken which can be stored digitally and shaded to produce life-like pictures of the baby. 4D just means that these life-like pictures can be seen to move in real time so the activity of the baby inside your womb can be studied. For example, with 4D scanning the baby can now be seen to yawn, smile, swallow, blink and perform intricate finger movements.
ARE THERE RISKS OR SIDE EFFECTS? No. The sound waves will not cause discomfort and they do not contain ionizing radiation.
HOW SHOULD I PREPARE FOR THE PROCEDURE? You should wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing for your exam.
HOW IS THE PROCEDURE PERFORMED? Ultrasound imaging is usually painless and fast. The sonographer will apply gel on your skin and press the transducer firmly against your body, moving it until the desired images are captured. The sonographer sees these images on the monitor immediately. The patient is able to see them as well. The examination usually lasts around 45 minutes.
WHO MAY ATTEND THE SONOGRAM? Visitors are limited to three. Children under age seven should be accompanied by another adult.
WHO INTERPRETS THE RESULTS? Results are reviewed by one of the obstetricians.
WILL I BE ABLE TO TAKE HOME THE IMAGES? Yes, you will receive image printouts as well as a CD or video of your session.
DOES INSURANCE PAY FOR 3D/4D SONOGRAMS? Currently, these are considered fun scans and elective procedures. They are not covered by insurance.

3D-4D Sonogram Tips:
- Drink a caffienated beverage (i.e. Coke or Mountain Dew) or eat a good meal or snack (chips and cookies are ok but not preferred) up to 1 hour before your scheduled appointment time.
- Try to relax as much as possible before the Sono. Babies can sense when you're getting excited or nervous and tend to move less. Relaxing will make baby feel at ease and hopefully move around more!
- When scheduling your appointment, try for a time when you usually feel baby moving the most.
- Please avoid smoking at least one hour prior to the start of the Sonogram. Smoking will cause the baby to slow down his or her movements!
A few extra reminders:
- For those of you traveling to Hutch, we recommend a morning or early afternoon appointment. This allows us to re-try later in the day and hopefully catch baby at a good time!
- Please arrive at least 10 minutes before the scheduled appointment time. This allows us to get paperwork ready so that you receive the maximum amount of time with your baby!
This is an extra opportunity for you to see and bond with your baby and we want you to get the best pictures we can get! Unfortunately, those little ones can be shy at times. We try our best to get baby to open up to us, but please keep in mind that baby can hide and is sometimes very good at it!
